    A survey on the (in)security of trusted execution environments

    As the number of security and privacy attacks continue to grow around the world, there is an ever increasing need to protect our personal devices. As a matter of fact, more and more manufactures are relying on Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) to shield their devices. In particular, ARM TrustZone (TZ) is being widely used in numerous embedded devices, especially smartphones, and this technology is the basis for secure solutions both in industry and academia. However, as shown in this paper, TEE is not bullet-proof and it has been successfully attacked numerous times and in very different ways. To raise awareness among potential stakeholders interested in this technology, this paper provides an extensive analysis and categorization of existing vulnerabilities in TEEs and highlights the design flaws that led to them. The presented vulnerabilities, which are not only extracted from existing literature but also from publicly available exploits and databases, are accompanied by some effective countermeasures to reduce the likelihood of new attacks.     Automatic Diagnosis of Ocular Toxoplasmosis from Fundus Images with Residual Neural Networks.

    Ocular toxoplasmosis (OT) is commonly diagnosed through the analysis of fundus images of the eye by a specialist. Despite Deep Learning being widely used to process and recognize pathologies in medical images, the diagnosis of ocular toxoplasmosis(OT) has not yet received much attention. A predictive computational model is a valuable time-saving option if used as a support tool for the diagnosis of OT. It could also help diagnose atypical cases, being particularly useful for ophthalmologists who have less experience. In this work, we propose the use of a deep learning model to perform automatic diagnosis of ocular toxoplasmosis from images of the eye fundus. A pretrained residual neural network is fine-tuned on a dataset of samples collected at the medical center of Hospital de Clínicas in Asunción, Paraguay. With sensitivity and specificity rates equal to 94% and 93%,respectively, the results show that the proposed model is highly promising. In order to replicate the results and advance further in this area of research, an open data set of images of the eye fundus labeled by ophthalmologists is made available.CONACYT - Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y TecnologíaPROCIENCI

    Management of a ruptured epidural catheter, an anesthesiologist's dilemma: a case report

    Epidural anesthesia is a widely used anesthetic technique in lower extremity surgeries although it is a relatively safe procedure, it can have complications, such as rupture of the epidural catheter. This is a 69-year-old male patient with a diagnosis of Wagner IV diabetic foot is presented, which was scheduled for left supracondylar amputation in which after epidural block, retention of the catheter tip in the epidural space at level L2-L3 was seen, so hemi laminectomy was performed in a second surgical stage in L2 and removal of the epidural catheter. Ideally a broken needle should be removed as soon as possible

    SMEPP: A Secure Middleware For Embedded P2P

    Abstract: The increasing presence of embedded devices with internet access capabilities constitutes a new challenge in software development. These devices are now cooperating in a distributed manner towards what has been called as "Internet of Things". In this new scenario the client-server model is sometimes not adequate and dynamic ad-hoc networks are more common than before. However, security poses as a hard issue as these systems are extremely vulnerable. In this paper, we introduce SMEPP project, which aims at developing a middleware designed for P2P systems with a special focus on embedded devices and security. SMEPP is designed to be deployed in a wide range of devices. It tries to ease the development of applications hiding platforms details and other aspects such as scalability, adaptability and interoperability. A full implementation of this middleware is already available that incorporates security features specially designed for low-resource devices. Moreover, we describe two business applications being developed using this middleware in the context of "Digital Home" and "Environmental Monitoring in Industrial Environments"

    Short-term variability in the activity and composition of the diazotroph community in a coastal upwelling system

    Today we know that diazotrophs are common and active in nitrogen (N) replete regions, however the factors controlling their distribution remain elusive. Previous studies in upwelling regions revealed that the composition of diazotrophs responded to changes in hydrodynamic forcing over seasonal scales. Here we used high-frequency observations collected during a 3-week cruise in the upwelling region off NW Iberia to describe changes in the activity and composition of diazotrophs over shorter temporal scales. The cruise started after a strong upwelling event followed by a few days of relaxation-downwelling, and soon after another upwelling pulse. Higher N2 fixation rates (2.2 ± 0.7 µmol m-3 d-1) were measured during relaxation-downwelling, when surface nitrate concentration was low. During the fertilization associated with the upwelling, N2 fixation dramatically decreased to 0.10 ± 0.09 µmol m-3 d-1. The comparison with nitrate consumption and diffusion confirmed the minor role of N2 fixation (<1%) as a source of new N for primary production. The unicellular cyanobacterium UCYN-A2 was the dominant diazotroph during the cruise. UCYN-A2 abundance was four times higher during relaxation-downwelling (4x104 copies L-1) compared to upwelling conditions (0.2x104 copies L-1), when the unusual Epsilonproteobacteria increased their relative abundance. These results indicate that diazotrophs can respond rapidly to changes in the environment, and point out to the availability of N as a key factor controlling the activity, composition and distribution of diazotrophs in eutrophic regions

    Aportes metodológicos para afrontar la masividad : Una experiencia de innovación sistemática en el ámbito universitario

    El presente trabajo muestra algunos resultados de un proceso educativo que venimos realizando desde el año 1992 en la Cátedra de Zoología General (Fac. Cs. Naturales y Museo, UNLP), como también, intentamos reforzar la reflexión permanente en cuanto a la producción de nuevas estrategias y prácticas docentes, en el espacio de la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de las Ciencias Biológicas. Este proceso surgió ante la imposibilidad de implcmentar el curso con las estrategias utilizadas históricamente, dado que el sistema áulico presentaba modificaciones relevantes. La caracterización más notable de esa nueva situación estaba dada por la Masividad. De una cursada tradicional de 200 alumnos, pasamos en 1992, a 450 y en la actualidad contamos con 700 cursantes. En el marco institucional la asignatura Zoología General, pertenece al plan de estudio (ciclo común) de las Licenciaturas en Ciencias Naturales, Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo, Universidad Nacional de La Plata. Sus orientaciones: Ecología, Zoología, Botánica, Antropología, Geología, Geoquímica y Paleontología. Es una materia correspondiente al primer año, cursan alumnos de cualquier orientación. Al inicio del ciclo lectivo 1992, una serie de circunstancias dieron como resultado la Masividad en la Universidad. Un hecho que nos llevó concretamente a la imposibilidad de implemcntar nuestro curso con la estructura tradicional.     Role of age and comorbidities in mortality of patients with infective endocarditis

    [Purpose]: The aim of this study was to analyse the characteristics of patients with IE in three groups of age and to assess the ability of age and the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) to predict mortality. [Methods]: Prospective cohort study of all patients with IE included in the GAMES Spanish database between 2008 and 2015.Patients were stratified into three age groups:<65 years,65 to 80 years,and ≥ 80 years.The area under the receiver-operating characteristic (AUROC) curve was calculated to quantify the diagnostic accuracy of the CCI to predict mortality risk. [Results]: A total of 3120 patients with IE (1327 < 65 years;1291 65-80 years;502 ≥ 80 years) were enrolled.Fever and heart failure were the most common presentations of IE, with no differences among age groups.Patients ≥80 years who underwent surgery were significantly lower compared with other age groups (14.3%,65 years; 20.5%,65-79 years; 31.3%,≥80 years). In-hospital mortality was lower in the <65-year group (20.3%,<65 years;30.1%,65-79 years;34.7%,≥80 years;p < 0.001) as well as 1-year mortality (3.2%, <65 years; 5.5%, 65-80 years;7.6%,≥80 years; p = 0.003).Independent predictors of mortality were age ≥ 80 years (hazard ratio [HR]:2.78;95% confidence interval [CI]:2.32–3.34), CCI ≥ 3 (HR:1.62; 95% CI:1.39–1.88),and non-performed surgery (HR:1.64;95% CI:11.16–1.58).When the three age groups were compared,the AUROC curve for CCI was significantly larger for patients aged <65 years(p < 0.001) for both in-hospital and 1-year mortality. [Conclusion]: There were no differences in the clinical presentation of IE between the groups. Age ≥ 80 years, high comorbidity (measured by CCI),and non-performance of surgery were independent predictors of mortality in patients with IE.CCI could help to identify those patients with IE and surgical indication who present a lower risk of in-hospital and 1-year mortality after surgery, especially in the <65-year group
